Cleaning the Kitchen
Clean versus Sanitary
CLEAN means the absence of dirt and SANITARY means the absence of illness-causing bacteria. Make a list of the areas in the kitchen that need to be kept clean and that need to be sanitized. Here is a partial list:
Clean. Floors, walls, ventilating hoods over stoves, handles, fronts and sides of ovens, refrigerators, cabinets, etc.
Sanitized. All food surface contact areas such as kitchen counters or tables, all eating utensils, food and beverage containers, pots, pans, interior of refrigerators, oven shelves, stove tops, dish racks, interior of dish washer, ice maker attachments on refrigerators, sponges and kitchen towels.
Cleaning can be achieved with just hot water, soap or mild detergent. Sanitizing requires heat over 180 degrees or sanitizing chemicals. Sanitizing temperatures are the type of temperature might be reached in a home dishwasher’s rinse cycle. If heat is not an option, then sanitizing cleaning products or dilute bleach must be used. The rule of thumb for a kitchen bleach solution is about 1 Tablespoon of bleach for a quart of water.

"Real Me" at Meaningful Days is hosting a Spring Cleaning Challenge that I am participating in. Wednesday is our check in day to let everyone know how our spring cleaning is coming along. This week I am cleaning my kitchen and I am also trying to get our taxes together to take to our accountant. I have made out my schedule through Friday. I hope I am able to finish on Saturday but it is hard to plan housework on the weekend because my husband is usually home and we usually have visitors. If I don't have the chance to finish with everything this week, I will do it on Monday. Thank you for stopping by.

Cleaning Tips
1. Clean your coffee maker every few weeks by filling the water reservoir with equal parts white vinegar and water and putting it through the brew cycle. Then use clean fresh water and repeat the brew cycle to rinse the machine. Repeat with fresh water two more times.
2. To clean a blender, squirt a few drops of liquid soap into it, fill halfway with warm water, cover and blend away the mess. Rinse and repeat if necessary. You can also use this method for food processors.
3. For lime and mineral deposits on your kitchen sink faucet, wrap vinegar-soaked paper towels around faucets for about an hour. This breaks down the mineral scale, and the chrome will be clean and shiny after buffing with a dry paper towel.
4. If plastic from the bread wrapper melts onto your toaster, use a little nail polish remover to get it off. Let the toaster cool before you try this.
5. To freshen the garbage disposal, sprinkle a couple of tablespoons of baking soda down the drain, drop in two ice cubes and turn it on. Then run the hot water for a few minutes while the disposal is working.
