Simple Things In Life

Myspace Movie Posters

I thought this was cute and it reminded me of my husband (sorry dear , I know you drink Dr. Pepper).

Yesterday when I was over at Skylar's, I noticed that Lauren, my 10 year old niece, was still in the bed and it was after 11:00 o'clock. I made a comment to Cindi, the lady that helps me care for Skylar, about how when I was that age my sister, brother, and I, along with other kids in the neighborhood, would have already been outside several hours playing, roaming around and having fun. We didn't have expensive video games and all to play with and I am thankful we didn't. We had hours of fun playing ball, making playhouses and baking mud pies, climbing trees, jumping rope, exploring, and riding bikes. I can remember making telephones using 2 cans and string, walking a 55 gallon barrel as it rolled along (our version of a treadmill). Cindi and I started discussing how inventive we were as kids and how we used our imaginations to come up with simple ways to keep us busy. From there, the conversation moved on to how simple things were not enough for us during our teens and 20's. We wanted the new car, nice house, and fancy clothes but soon enough we discovered that having all these things did not make us happy and instead it is the simplest things that truly make us happy. Which led to us discussing some of those simple things that make us happy and I have listed a few of mine below in no particular order:

1. Loving Jesus and knowing he loves me.
2. Waking up to birds singing, especially when I do not have to get out of bed.
3. The feel of my pillow when I'm very tired and finally go to bed.
4. Rose bushes blooming.
5. Loving others and being loved
6. Helping with my nephew and niece.
7. Relaxing and watching tv with my husband
8. Having friends visit me.
9. The joy that comes from spending time with family and friends.
10.A day at home with nowhere to go.
11. Curling up on a cold day in my comfortable chair with a good book to read beside the fireplace.
12. A clean house.
13. A hot bubble bath.
14. Clean fresh lined dried sheets, sprayed with lavender water and pressed.
15. Seeing the flowers that I planted grow and then having the pleasure of smelling them
16. The feeling of knowing I am needed.
17. When my husband gives me a hug and says, "I Love You."
18. The fragrance of lilacs
19. Going barefoot
20.The smell of bread baking
21. Feeling sunshine on my face
22. Watching little children run and play and hearing their laughter.
23. Helping others feel good.
24. A weed-free flower bed.
25.Knowing who I am and where I came from.

So have you ever stopped and thought about what simple things in your life make you happy and bring a smile to your face? Please feel free to share. I would love to hear what they are :)

I have to admit that my son is a lot like your niece. He stays up late texting or watching movies, etc. When I was a kid, I was a lot like you. You could ALWAYS find fun things to do outside.

It's funny that you ask about simple things. I was just at another blog who mentioned that she loved simple things, too. There is so much in my life that I'm grateful for. Lots of material things, but so much more of the untangible things. The Lord, my husband, my children, the sound of birds in my back yard, God's country and how He paints landscapes, the sky. There's so much! I would have to do my own post to list them all.
Blessings,
Patricia :o)

I love your list. The barrel brought back a memory for me. I remember lying in a barrel that had both ends cut out and rolling down a hill. I was fortunate not to get hurt because the hill was very steep and there was a ditch at the bottom!

Elizabeth, what a wonderful post. It's true, I spent my childhood making mudpies, leaf burritos, playing Red Rover and countless of other fun activities at my parents house. It's sad that children these days won't have the memories of playing and being imaginative like we do.
